We all love the Gold Coast. It’s no surprise that white ants love the Gold Coast too, though probably not for the same reasons. Like shivering, frostbitten refugees from a Melbourne winter, they’re moving to the Gold Coast in their droves. That’s particularly bad news for you if you own a house or a business that might be susceptible to white ants. Your dream home or investment property could be on the menu for these voracious eaters unless to you take steps to actively dissuade them from dining at (or on) your place.
What are white ants?
White ants, more accurately called termites, is an insect with an insatiable appetite for wood. They are actually not an ant at all, but something closer to a cockroach. Early European settlers hadn’t encountered them before and couldn’t identify them. They called them white ants because these opaque, milky-coloured insects most closely resembled ants, a species of insect they were familiar with. There are hundreds of species of termites in Australia but only a handful are responsible for the catastrophic damage that termites get a bad rap for. Subterranean termite species are amongst the worst culprits. Sadly, they’re right at home here on the Gold Coast.
In much the same way the bees live in hives, termites or white ants live in colonies. The colony has a strict hierarchy and a strict division of labour within the colony. The colony comprises of three main castes or classes: kings and queens who are responsible for reproducing, workers who supply the colony with food, build, repair and rebuild tunnels, and soldiers who protect the colony. The extent of termite colonies and the fact that they are so widespread on the Gold Coast make them a force to be reckoned with for home owners.
Gold Coast termite damage
If they weren’t so destructive, you’d have to admit that termites or white ants are a fascinating, industrious species. However, they’re responsible for widespread destruction and heartbreak on the Gold Coast. Gold Coast termite damage is a real problem for property owners and something to take very seriously.
When you consider the role that wood plays in the construction of homes; the framework, cladding, architraves, doors, flooring and panelling, white ants pose an enormous risk. White ants are so problematic because they consume all things wooden in their path. They relentlessly tunnel through it and turning it to dust. What’s more, they’re a secretive species. They can manage to cause extensive damage to wood without even disturbing layers of paint on the surface. The first time that you may become aware you have a problem is when an architrave crumbles under your fingertips. By that time, the damage is extensive and incredibly costly to repair. Structural damage to your home caused by white ants send you spiralling into debt and render you investment worthless. They can even leave you homeless.
White ants and their love affair with the Gold Coast
White ants love the warm, humid climate of the Gold Coast. With its abundant vegetation and rich soil from decaying plant matter, the moist conditions are ideally suited to termite breeding. The Gold Coast is a rapidly expanding city fringed by extensive suburban developments. Many of the new housing estates encroach on bushland. The scrub and forest is the traditional home of white ants but housing developments reduce their food sources. Happily for the white ants, both new and old homes offer up an irresistible range of alternate dining options to a hungry termite colony.
