Termite inspections are really important. They can ensure that your home is free from termite damage, and if there is an infestation they offer you the opportunity to catch it in the early stages to minimise any damage. A termite infestation is not the end of the world, however a termite infestation that isn’t caught in time, is a very bad thing. There is no insurance company that covers termite damage, and they really can tear your home apart, quite literally from the inside out.
When do I need a pest inspection?
A pest inspection should be carried out at least once every year. The cost of getting a professional inspection is far less than the cost of an infestation that gets out of hand.
I want to purchase a property however the vendor will not pay for an inspection?
Ideally, and in all honestly fairly, the vendor should be willing to pay for the pest inspection. However, if you are very seriously considering the purchase then you must get an inspection done, even if you have to pay for it yourself. Firstly, if there is a termite infestation, you need to know about it. This can absolutely affect your buying decision.
Secondly, an inspection will let you know if there has been any termite activity in the past. If there has been and it has been properly taken care of, there is no reason not to go ahead with the purchase. Knowing that there has been termite activity should help you leverage a better price, or an ongoing termite treatment maintenance plan. Knowledge is power as they say!
With termite inspections, the question really should be, ‘can I afford not to’ rather, than ‘can I afford an inspection’. The cost is minimal in comparison to the damages and the financial burden that termites can cause.
